Jaguars HC Doug Pederson labeled WR Zay Jones day-to-day with the knee injury he suffered in Sunday's loss to the Chiefs. Jones is still set for additional testing on the knee. He was able to return to the Week 2 game, so we're tentatively expecting him to be available for this weekend's game vs. the Texans. But we'll update his status when we know more.
The Jags mustered only 9 points in Sunday's loss to Kansas City. That meant a big-time dud from QB Trevor Lawrence, who tallied just 216 passing yards on a 53.6% completion rate. He managed only 5.3 yards per attempt. “We’re better than that. We’re a better team than that … it’s kind of embarrassing,” Lawrence said afterward. Calvin Ridley (2 catches) and Zay Jones (0 catches) played through minor knee injuries in this one, but we’re not expecting any missed time. Expect a Lawrence bounce back in Week 3 vs. Houston.

Jaguars HC Doug Pederson is turning over play-calling duties to OC Press Taylor, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. "I totally trust Press," Pederson told NFL.com. "We think alike. We've been together for a long time, and he's around Trevor [Lawrence] all the time and knows what Trevor likes." We'd prefer Pederson continue calling plays considering Jacksonville's success last year. But we're ultimately not expecting a significant fantasy impact here. Taylor has worked under Pederson for six NFL seasons.
Per beat writer John Shipley, Jaguars WRs Christian Kirk and Zay Jones “have picked up where they left off [last season].” Kirk and Jones enjoyed career years, finishing at PPR WR12 and WR26, respectively. A healthy Calvin Ridley figures to limit target volume. But the Underdog Fantasy ADPs on Kirk (WR27) and Jones (WR49) put them in a draftable range. See where they sit in our updated WR rankings.
Jaguars WR Zay Jones set a career high in target share in his first Jacksonville season, ranking 33rd among WRs in that category. But his average target depth decreased by nearly 5 yards vs. his final season with the Raiders. That came despite Jones remaining primarily an outside WR. He has spent more than 65% of his pass snaps outside each of the past four years, according to Pro Football Focus. Calvin Ridley leads Jones by 1.0 in career aDOT and seems the more likely downfield threat for 2023. Jones, of course, is coming off the best fantasy season of his career. So this aspect might not matter too much. But the shorter aDOT could hurt further if Ridley's arrival cuts way into Jones' target share. All that said, we have Jones a little ahead of ADP in our 2023 WR rankings.
The NFL announced Monday that it has reinstated Jaguars WR Calvin Ridley. The 28-year-old hasn't played since Week 7 of 2021. Ridley initially left the team for personal reasons. The league then suspended him for all of 2022 after revealing that Ridley had placed football bets while he was away from the Falcons. Jacksonville acquired the wideout last November for a fifth-round 2023 NFL Draft pick and a conditional fourth-rounder for 2024. (That can become a third- or second-round pick.) The Jaguars now add Ridley to an offense that got quality fantasy football output from WR Christian Kirk, WR Zay Jones, and TE Evan Engram in 2022. Projecting the 2023 target shares will be a challenge, but each remains an upside player. Ridley's best ball ADP has been all over the place this early draft season. He has climbed as high as WR16 in Underdog drafts and currently sits 20th there, four WR spots ahead of Kirk. FFPC drafters, meanwhile, have Ridley 29th among WRs -- two spots behind Kirk. The two also sit close together on other draft sites. Keep the ADP variations in mind as you decide both whether and where to draft each Jaguars wideout. The collective talent can only help QB Trevor Lawrence, who's going eighth at the position in FFPC drafts right now.
The Jaguars have no plans to rest starters against the Texans today, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports. "It's full steam ahead," a Jaguars official told ESPN. "Everybody's ready and everybody's playing." The AFC South title comes down to next weekend's game vs. the Titans, but the Jaguars do still have about a 6% chance at a Wild Card spot, so today's game isn't meaningless. We're projecting Jaguars players for full playing time.
Jaguars TE Evan Engram racked up 113 yards on 7 catches in Thursday night's win over the Jets. His team-leading 8 targets constituted 25.8% of QB Trevor Lawrence's total attempts. Engram also accounted for 35% of the team's receptions and 49.3% of the receiving yards. No other Jaguar reached 30 yards on the night or exceeded 3 receptions. WR Christian Kirk caught 3 of 6 targets for 22 yards. WR Zay Jones managed just 1 reception for 14 yards on 4 targets. Jacksonville closes out the fantasy schedule (for most leagues) with a Week 17 visit to Houston. Although that matchup has favored rushing all season, it's not a scary spot for any members of the Jacksonville pass offense. For Engram's sake, the Texans matchup has also been much friendlier to TE scoring (7th best) than to WRs (28th).
The forecast for tonight’s Jaguars-Jets game calls for light rain early, potentially getting heavier throughout the night. The bigger concern is the wind. We’re looking at sustained 15-20 mph winds with gusts of 30+ mph. It's ugly weather that figures to impact the passing and kicking games — while also possibly pushing both teams to run more than they would in better conditions. It marked the 5th straight game of at least 7 targets for Jones and his 4th time with at least 6 catches in that span. It was just his 2nd 100-yard game of the year, though, and just his 3rd time north of 80 yards. The TDs also more than doubled Jones' season total. TE Evan Engram led the team with 8 receptions and tied WR Christian Kirk for the target lead (10). WR Marvin Jones claimed the team's other TD reception among 2 catches for 17 yards (on 6 targets).
