Derek Carr Fantasy Football News | Shark Bites

Shark Bites are the latest fantasy football news & NFL updates. Draft Sharks has been in business since 1999. And when we started, redraft was the dominant form of fantasy football. Check out what we've learned about this most basic form of fantasy football along the way.

Saints QB Derek Carr suffered an oblique injury in the fourth quarter of Monday night's game vs. the Chiefs. He's scheduled for an MRI on Tuesday to get a better look at the damage. "Not good," Carr said when asked how he felt afterward.

Saints QB Derek Carr threw for just 142 yards in Sunday's loss to the Eagles, with 1 TD and 1 INT. He went just 14-of-25 passing as New Orleans ran 28 times vs. 27 dropbacks.

Saints QB Derek Carr delivered a solid stat line in Sunday's beatdown of the Cowboys: 243 passing yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT, and a 1-yard rushing score on his only attempt. He went just 11-of-16 passing for the game and now has just 39 total pass attempts through two victories.

A Saints source told The Athletic's Dianna Russini that the "vibes are really, really high" around rookie QB Spencer Rattler. Rattler was a five-star recruit and the No. 1 pro-style QB in the 2019 class, so there's certainly plenty of physical ability here. Russini said that there's currently no QB controversy in New Orleans but added that that could change if QB Derek Carr struggles this season.

Nick Underhill of Saints.football reports that Saints TE Juwan Johnson "suffered a lower leg injury and is expected to miss a good amount of time." We'll watch for more specifics on the injury, but that sounds pretty ominous. Underhill did add that he hasn't heard that Johnson will be sidelined into the regular season.

Update: ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Johnson will undergo foot surgery. He's expected to be sidelined “a while," Schefter adds, but "the hope and belief for now is that he will be back for the start of the season."

The Saints added South Carolina QB Spencer Rattler in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Rattler was a five-star recruit and the No. 1 pro-style QB in the 2019 class. But he failed to live up to those expectations across five college seasons. Rattler redshirted behind Jalen Hurts at Oklahoma in 2019 before taking over as the Sooners’ starter in 2020. He finished that season with 3,031 passing yards and 28 TDs vs. seven INTs on a 67.5% completion rate and 9.6 yards per attempt. His production was down the following year before getting benched for Caleb Williams. Rattler then transferred to South Carolina, where he totaled 6,212 passing yards on a 67.5% completion rate and 7.8 yards per attempt over the past two seasons. He ranked 78th among 93 qualifiers in Pro Football Focus’ 2022 passing grades and 50th out of 95 last year. An aggressive passer with good anticipation and plenty of arm strength, Rattler can make every throw. His decision-making and timing need improvement, though. And Rattler has little experience working under center, with 85% of his college snaps coming from shotgun. He’ll open his career behind QB Derek Carr in New Orleans. Carr is signed through 2026 but carries huge cap hits the next two years. We’ll see if Rattler can develop into his successor. He’ll be worth considering in Round 3 or 4 of superflex rookie drafts.

Klint Kubiak is expected to be named the Saints' new OC, according to multiple reports. Kubiak is currently the 49ers' passing-game coordinator, so the move can't become official until after the Super Bowl. The 36-year-old son of Gary Kubiak has 10 seasons of NFL coaching experience. That includes serving as Vikings OC back in 2021. That team ranked 12th in total yards and 14th in points, ranking near the middle of the pack in run/pass split.

The Saints fired OC Pete Carmichael, as well as senior offensive assistant Bob Bicknell and WRs coach Kodi Burns. New Orleans finished a solid 14th in total yards and ninth in points scored this past year, but the organization is evidently looking for some fresh blood after employing Carmichael since 2009. We'll see who the Saints tab as their new OC.

Saints QB Derek Carr finished a strong close to the season with 4 TDs on 22-of-28 passing in Sunday's 48-17 win over the Falcons. It was Carr's fifth straight game with 2+ TDs. He completed 74% of his passes over that span while throwing just 2 INTs. That season-ending stretch can only help Carr's job status, but his contract likely wouldn't allow New Orleans to move on anyway. According to Spotrac, Carr carries a $35.7 million cap hit for 2024, but cutting him would mean $52.8 million in dead money. That would be especially tough on a franchise projected to be nearly $76 million over the 2024 salary cap. Expect Carr to remain the starting QB for the 2024 Saints. And don't expect him to continue rolling the way he finished this season. Carr has showed us across 10 seasons with two teams that he's a limited real-life player and fantasy contributor. And he might return only Chris Olave and rookie A.T. Perry from the current WR corps.

The Buccaneers have ruled Edge Shaq Barrett (groin) and CB Carlton Davis (concussion) out for Sunday's game against the Saints. That hurts an already vulnerable pass defense. It's a nice fantasy spot for New Orleans QB Derek Carr and WR Chris Olave.

Saints QB Derek Carr played his best game of the season Week 15 vs. the Giants. Interestingly, the strong effort came with Chris Olave (ankle) sidelined. Carr hit Juwan Johnson, Jimmy Graham, and Keith Kirkwood for scores while completing 82.1% of his passes. What helped: Taysom Hill mixed in for only one pass attempt and one carry in his return from hand/foot injuries. A positive matchup helped too, but credit Carr for delivering alongside a thin supporting cast. Next week, he gets a quick turnaround with a road matchup against the Rams. We’ll see if Olave returns for that one. Even if he does, Carr will project as a clear QB2. The former Raider doesn’t need to be rostered outside of deep leagues/superflex formats.

11:33am EST 12/10/23

Saints QB Derek Carr (concussion, rib, right shoulder) is active for today’s game vs. the Panthers. He’ll be playing through a non-displaced rib cartilage fracture and an AC joint sprain in his shoulder, making him a shaky fantasy start.
