ESPN’s Adam Schefter provided the following update on 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk. Recall that Aiyuk tore his ACL and MCL back in Week 7. “From what I understand, Dr. Neal ElAttrache is pleased with his progress…he’s coming along," Schefter said on his podcast. “I would think he’s ready to play by mid-season.”
It would be a minor surprise if Aiyuk missed a full 12 months, but we’ll certainly track his progress throughout the offseason.
There’s also a more immediate storyline surrounding the former first-round pick. Aiyuk has a roster bonus of nearly $23 million that’s due on April 1. If he remains on San Francisco’s roster after that time, a trade will become extremely unlikely.
Here’s more from Schefter on a potential Aiyuk trade.
“There has not been a whole lot of interest from teams because of the price and because of the injury concerns…nobody wants to take on the contract when you don’t know when the guy is going to be healthy again this season.”
Recall that prior to the injury, Aiyuk caught only 25 of 47 targets for 374 yards and 0 TDs. San Francisco traded Deebo Samuel earlier this offseason, but the pass catching group remains strong with George Kittle, Christian McCaffrey, Jauan Jennings, and Ricky Pearsall.
Aiyuk ultimately looks like a shaky pick at his current Underdog ADP.
