To the surprise of probably no one, the Jets did not manage to find a team interested in trading for WR Davante Adams. Instead, multiple reports say they're releasing the veteran wideout.
Adams can still play. He ranked 14th among WRs in receptions last year, 15th in receiving yards, and tied for 12th in TD receptions despite missing three games, getting traded mid-year, and closing the season on the same team as Garrett Wilson.
The problem with his trade potential was a $38.3 million cap hit on his existing Jets deal. And the Jets will save $29.9 million in cap space by releasing him, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. So they had little reason to help any potential suitor with that money.
Adams just turned 32 on Dec. 24. So he probably doesn't have a lot of NFL seasons left. But expect him to land a solid-to-strong opportunity in free agency.
Teams with a WR need and $50+ million in 2025 cap space include:
The Jets still need to find their 2025 QB. But WR Garrett Wilson should emerge as a target-share winner with Adams' departure.
Wilson commonly slides into early Round 3 in best ball ADP -- just a year after he was going at the end of Round 1.
The Jets have also given WR Allen Lazard permission to seek a trade -- but are also reportedly "open to bringing him back."
