Steelers QB Justin Fields appears headed to start another week. The Steelers are preparing to have Fields start against the Chargers this week to give QB Russell Wilson another week to heal his calf injury.
HC Mike Tomlin: "We're readying ourselves around Justin. We'll stay in that mindset until something happens. Hypotheticals are a waste of time."
With the Steelers starting 2-0, there is no reason to rush back Wilson to the starting lineup if he is still healing from his calf injury.
Beat Reporter Gerry Dulac reported that the Steelers plan for Wilson to return as the starter in Week 4 against the Colts, but that remains to be seen.
Fields carries a solid floor with his rushing ability and threw his first TD as a Steeler last week. Having the Steelers home opener against a Chargers team that just stayed on the road after Week 2 is a good spot for Fields to put solid numbers in what could be his final game as a starter.
Though Wilson doesn't offer the rushing upside of his past, he should be more consistent as a passer and help improve the Steelers offense scoring opportunities as a whole. The ceiling is low, but when bye weeks start to hit, he is a player to consider adding.
