NFL Network's Ian Rapoport calls 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey (calf, Achilles) a "long shot" to play vs. the Vikings this weekend, based on conversations with the team. That echoes ESPN's Adam Schefter's sentiment on Monday night. McCaffrey is dealing with a calf injury and Achilles tendinitis. It's the latter giving him more trouble now.
HC Kyle Shanahan claimed that McCaffrey could have played on Monday had it been a playoff game. Even if that's true, it'd follow that the team will continue to be cautious in bringing CMC back. That's easier to do after RB Jordan Mason's huge Week 1.
We're removing McCaffrey from the Week 2 Rankings for now and will continue to monitor the situation.
If he misses Sunday's game vs. the Vikings, Mason will be a virtual must-start after handling 28 carries on an 81% snap rate last week. He even ran 22 pass routes, although he finished with just one target.
Mason is obviously the top target on Week 2 waivers.
Managers in deeper leagues should also consider stashing RB Isaac Guerendo. If McCaffrey's injury continues to cost him games, Guerendo will be just a Mason injury away from a significant role.
