Cowboys RB Rico Dowdle was mentioned as "battling it out" with RB Malik Davis by EVP Stephen Jones. He was highly complimentary of RB Royce Freeman.
EVP Stephen Jones: "RB Royce Freeman has really impressed. We were surprised he was available.
We were just talking about it last night at the scout dinner, ‘What in the hell was he doing sitting around out there?’ An interesting guy to just have been sitting there. He’s a great 2-3 combination in terms of what he can do as a backup. He’s a big, thick guy. And he’s a hell of a special teams player as well. He’ll be a good addition and great complement to (Ezekiel Elliott). And then we’ll let these young guys between (Rico Dowdle and Malik Davis) and those guys battle it out.”
Dowdle has been a popular upside pick in the last few rounds of drafts along with Elliott. But, Jones' words may mean that the situation is more jumbled than we think.
If Freeman impresses in camp and makes the roster, he could be the back-up and compliment to Elliott. This means Freeman is another deep sleeper selection this year, despite him never quite sticking on another NFL team.
Dowdle still has an opportunity to go out and impress as we get into the preseason and deeper into training camp. Don't discount him quite yet, but it isn't a great sign for his potential to be a relevant fantasy player.
Especially if he may be on the bubble to make the team.
