Bottom Line

Brissett could turn into a superflex value if the Pats develop Drake Maye slowly.

So, the veteran’s fine to consider late in 2-QB leagues for that potential outcome alone.

Just be realistic. He’s unlikely to hold down the starting gig all season. Plus, in Brissett’s prior starting experience, he never became a fantasy difference-maker.

What We Learned Last Year

  • Brissett competed with Sam Howell for the QB1 job in Washington.
    • Howell got the Week 1 nod and held the job throughout last season.
  • Brissett excelled in relief in Week 15, completing 8 of 10 throws for 124 yards and 2 TDs.
  • The following week, Brissett made another impressive relief appearance, throwing for 100 yards and a TD against the Jets.
  • Brissett was slated to start Week 17, but a hamstring injury kept him out. He missed Week 18 as well.

What to Expect in 2024

  • Brissett signed a one-year deal worth a max of $12 million. It’s typically high-end backup money.
  • However, the Patriots won’t just hand the Week 1 starting gig to Round 1 QB Drake Maye.
    • HC Jerod Mayo said that these two will battle to start in training camp.
    • Brissett should be considered the Week 1 favorite given his veteran status and NFL experience.
  • Maye, though, is likely to see the field before long.
  • This pass catching corps just isn’t one to believe in – at least not yet.
    • The Pats added a pair of rookies in the draft: Ja’Lynn Polk (Round 2) and Javon Baker (Round 4).
    • Veteran WR Kendrick Bourne is coming off an October ACL tear.
    • Demario Douglas adds a solid slot presence.
    • Hunter Henry returns for year four in New England to supply a solid (albeit unspectacular) TE1 option.
  • The O-line has a huge question mark at LT, where Chukwuma Okorafor is expected to start. He was a spot starter for Pittsburgh last year and will make the transition from RT.
    • G Cole Strange is expected to miss early-season games due to a knee injury, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Jacoby Brissett Injures Right Shoulder in Preseason

Patriots QB Jacoby Brissett took one drive in their preseason game against the Washington Commanders. The team reports that Brissett sustained a right shoulder injury and is questionable. With only 14 days until the Patriots season opener, his status is currently unknown.

Commanders QB Jacoby Brissett (hamstring) is "unlikely" to play vs. the 49ers today, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. "But the team wants to see how he feels in pre-game warmups before making any decisions," Schefter adds. We'll get Washington's inactives around 11:30 am ET, but it sounds like it'll be QB Sam Howell back under center today. He's been so bad the past two weeks that he's been benched for Brissett. Howell would be tough to trust even as a QB2 in Week 17 fantasy lineups.

Commanders QB Jacoby Brissett hurt a hamstring in Friday's practice and is now questionable for Sunday's game against the 49ers. We'll have to watch his status through the weekend. No Brissett would mean another start for Sam Howell. The San Francisco matchup hasn't been awful for QB scoring but has certainly been negative. Howell, meanwhile, has been awful over his past three games. He has finished three straight weeks with 127 passing yards or less, getting pulled in each of the past two games. He doesn't belong in any fantasy lineups, and his recent performance would mean bad news for Washington pass-catchers vs. Brissett starting. Watch for rankings updates as the situation becomes clearer.

Dolphins QB Jacoby Brissett injured his right knee in the 3rd quarter of Thursday night's game vs. the Ravens. That's forced QB Tua Tagovailoa onto the field, despite his left finger injury. We'll update Brissett's status when we know more.

Update: Brissett has been cleared to return, according to the NFL Network broadcast crew, but Tagovailoa is in the game.

Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa (finger) is listed as questionable for Thursday night's game vs. the Ravens. He'll be a game-time decision. "Plan is to make a decision on where Tua’s grip, discomfort and ability to make every throw is after pregame workout," NFL Network's Cameron Wolfe tweeted. QB Jacoby Brissett will start if Tua can't. Both guys are only in play in 2-QB fantasy leagues.
