The Patriots view TreVeyon Henderson as a three-down back, VP of Player Personnel Eliot Wolf said Friday night. "Extremely good speed, pass protection, pass game," Wolf said of his second-round pick. "Although he's a little bit undersized, we view him as a 3-down back. Just a really good complement. He is a threat with the ball in his hands; speed to take it the distance any time he touches it."
It's not uncommon for a team to label a RB a three-down player right after drafting him. But it's notable here because Henderson is only 202 pounds and never topped 183 carries across his four college seasons.
Wolf's words don't guarantee Henderson anything when it comes to his NFL volume, of course. But the fact that New England spent the 38th overall pick of the draft on him bodes well for his opportunity.
Henderson runs bigger than his size. And, as Wolf alluded to, he's one of the best pass protection RBs in this year's class. He'll likely never be a workhorse as a pro, but Henderson looks capable of handling 12-15 carries and a handful of targets per game. He lands in RB3 territory in the 2025 PPR Rankings but has upside into the top-20.
Rhamondre Stevenson was a big fantasy loser on Friday night. He topped the depth chart heading into the draft but now looks no better than half of a committee. And it's more likely that he ends up as a clear No. 2 behind Henderson. New HC Mike Vrabel has no ties to Stevenson, although OC Josh McDaniels was with New England for Stevenson's 2021 rookie season.
