The Cowboys have acquired QB Joe Milton and a 7th-round pick from the Patriots. Dallas will send a 5th-rounder back to New England.
From The Athletic's Saad Yousuf:
"Milton will compete with [Will] Grier for the primary backup spot. Acquiring Milton doesn’t mean the Cowboys won’t pick a quarterback in the draft later this month if they have the opportunity to get a player at great value but it does soften the need at the position."
Grier has made two NFL appearances since entering the league as a Round 3 pick in 2019.
Milton has been on the trade block for weeks, so this move isn’t a surprise.
The 2024 Round 6 pick saw extended action in one game last season. Milton was excellent, though, throwing for 8.3 YPA and an 81.5% adjusted completion rate. That game (vs. Buffalo) also showed off his mobility, both inside and out of the pocket. Milton scored one rushing TD.
Of course, landing in Dallas doesn’t provide a starting opportunity. Dak Prescott is under contract through the 2028 season.
Only 25, we’ll see if Milton can develop his rare arm strength and become a future QB1. For now, he’s only worth a roster spot in ultra-deep superflex formats.
