ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that the Jaguars plan to release WR Christian Kirk when the new league year begins next week. Kirk spent the past three years in Jacksonville after arriving as a free agent from Arizona. He finished WR12 in total PPR points in 2022 but then lost 14 games to injuries over the past two seasons. The Jaguars planned to trade Kirk to the Steelers last year before the wideout suffered a broken collarbone in Week 8. His release will reportedly save Jacksonville "over $10.4 million" in cap space.
Kirk benefited from target volume in a 2022 Jags offense that counted WR Zay Jones as the No. 2 option.
Kirk probably works deeper downfield than you realize. He sports an 11.0-yard career aDOT, according to Pro Football Focus, and set career highs in yards per catch each of the past two years:
But Kirk also tended to come off the field in two-WR sets those two seasons. And all that sums him up pretty well as a player.
Kirk's a nice WR to have around and can help your offense if you don't have better options. But if he's your top guy, then your pass offense probably isn't awesome.
We'll see where he lands -- and for how much -- before projecting him any further. Kirk sits just 63rd among WRs in our current PPR rankings.
We expected the Jaguars to part with Kirk this offseason, one way or another. So this move comes as no surprise and shouldn't affect his dynasty valuation vs. where he already sat.
The right landing spot could make him a WR3 candidate in PPR over the next couple of years. Kirk doesn't turn 29 until Nov. 18.
WR Parker Washington stands as an immediate winner. He's the next guy up in the slot for the Jags ... at the moment.
Of course, Jacksonville has a new GM (finally) and new HC. So we'll see what other moves might affect the WR corps.
There are targets available behind WR Brian Thomas Jr. for whomever emerges.
