The Panthers on Tuesday announced a new two-year deal with QB Andy Dalton. It'll reportedly pay him $8 million, with $6 million of that guaranteed and a max value of $10 million. Dalton spent the past two seasons with Carolina, starting six total games.
ESPN's Adam Schefter: "Panthers QB Bryce Young has developed a close relationship with Dalton, and now the two continue to get to work together."
Dalton's lone start in 2023 came when Young was injured. Last year, of course, he replaced a benched Young for five games.
But Young reclaimed his spot and played much better the rest of the way. It's worth noting that Dalton's new contract pays him at a clear backup level by today's standards rather than a potential starter.
It's also worth noting that Dalton will turn 38 in October. If Carolina wanted a QB to challenge Young, then waiting for the open market over re-signing Dalton early would seem like a better move.
In short, this Dalton signing seems like neutral-to-good news for Young's status in 2025 and beyond.
Young would have been easier to buy in dynasty just after his benching, but you might still be able to get good value on him in superflex leagues.
Young's outlook has clearly improved vs. this time a year ago, but his upside remains limited. So don't get too excited about going after him.
