ESPN Patriots writer Mike Reiss says there was a "notable shift in Jerod Mayo's answers" about his team's QB situation in Monday's video conference with reporters. "He seems to strongly be considering switch to Drake Maye," Reiss adds.
Mayo had previously called the manner in which his team beat the Bengals in Week 1 "unsustainable." Pretty fair assessment, given that New England has lost four straight games since then.
The most recent loss came Sunday against the Tyler Huntley-led Dolphins. You certainly can't blame Jacoby Brissett for yielding 372 total yards to Miami -- or 400+ to the previous two opponents.
But the Pats have reached 300 total yards just once through five games -- the OT loss to Seattle. And the team has yet to exceed 160 passing yards in a game.
Maye isn't likely to turn New England into an offensive powerhouse. But he'll be a near-lock from dramatic improvement in passing upside.
And frankly, if he isn't, then the Patriots should find out soon so they can go find another QB.
Add Maye this week in 2-QB and superflex leagues where he's available.
Every pass-catcher in New England would be at least a mild winner if the team makes the QB switch.
TE Hunter Henry stands closest to fantasy relevance. We'd have to see what his target counts look like with the new QB.
WRs Demario Douglas, Ja'Lynn Polk, and Kendrick Bourne could be cheap, speculative adds in deep redraft leagues.
