Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes underwhelmed in a Week 2 win over the Bengals. Mahomes mustered only 151 yards, 2 TDs and 2 INTs, marking his lowest yardage output since Week 7 of 2019.
What They're Saying
TE Travis Kelce caught only 1 pass for 5 yards. Here’s Mahomes on why that happened.
“They’re doing a good job of just having two people for him pretty much the entire game. That’s why you’ve seen guys like Rashee and Worthy. If you look at the first touchdown, I’m actually looking at Trav, and the backside safety goes all the way across the field to help guard Travis, and I threw the ball on the sideline to Rashee.”
Mahomes continued, discussing Kelce’s slow start to 2024.
“We’ve played two opponents [that] we’ve played a lot [Ravens and Bengals]. They had a plan on how they were going to account for Travis, but as the season goes on, he’s going to get his catches. He’s going to get his yards.
But the leader he is — what’s special is he’s hyping everybody up. He’s keeping everybody motivated — and that’s what you need out of your great players.”
2024 Fantasy Football Impact
DC Lou Anarumo deserves credit for dialing up an excellent scheme that – outside of a downfield score to Rashee Rice – limited explosive plays. Note that Mahomes has now been held to 1 passing score in 2 of his past 3 matchups with Cincinnati.
On Sunday, DL Trey Hendrickson made life tough on Mahomes with consistent pressure. In fact, the Chiefs benched starting LT Kingsley Suamataia.
With Isiah Pacheco suffering a broken leg in this one, the Chiefs might shift a bit more work to the air. Regardless, Mahomes is locked in as a weekly QB1.
