Jaguars RB Travis Etienne took 12 carries for only 44 yards and 1 TD in Week 1. He added 2 catches for 15 yards for an OK fantasy day. Most troubling, though, was the involvement of second-year RB Tank Bigsby. Coming off a strong training camp, Bigbsy matched Etienne in carries and topped him in yards by 29.
Here's Jags beat writer John Shipley of SI.com:
"How the Jaguars divide the workload will be interesting moving forward. Etienne has been the heart of the offense for two seasons, but they got equal carries on Sunday and the Jaguars could potentially opt to ride with the hotter hand.
If weeks like this happen again, the Jaguars' own hand may be forced in the backfield."
Etienne’s day should have been better, as he fumbled at the goal line for a Dolphins touchback. The young RB didn’t lose a fumble at any point in 2023.
We’ll see if the coaching staff comments on the RB split ahead of a tough Week 2 matchup with Cleveland. Regardless, Etienne will remain a worthwhile fantasy starter – albeit one with a lower fantasy floor.
We'll have updated Rest of Way Rankings out for Monday, but look for Bigbsy to inch up much closer to FLEX territory.
