Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy said Monday that Cooper Rush remains Dallas' No. 2 QB for the regular-season opener (behind Dak Prescott). That makes Trey Lance just the No. 3 guy on the roster, and likely just an emergency QB3 on the gameday rosters.
Ben Grimaldi of Cowboys Wire: "Finding out if Lance was a capable QB was one of the more difficult things the team had to do heading into training camp. ... [Jerry] Jones and [Mike] McCarthy knew the team needed to see more and unfortunately, they probably didn’t like the results. The results of the summer were clear, Lance couldn’t overtake primary backup QB Cooper Rush and isn’t ready to start games if needed."
There's no real impact for this year, unless Dak Prescott goes down. If that does happen, though -- as it did for 11 games in 2020 and five games in 2022 -- then Cooper Rush will be your Cowboys starter.
Rush filled in for five starts in 2022, averaging 191.2 passing yards, 1 TD, and 0.6 INTs per game. He also has just 6 career rushing yards on 32 attempts. So there's not much fantasy potential to mine here.
If you've continued holding on to Lance in dynasty, then you're probably wasting a roster spot. It's up to you, of course, if you want to continue doing so.
Lance is in the final year on his rookie contract, so he should hit the open market for the first time this offseason. We'll see if there's any interest. There wasn't much when San Francisco traded him (for a fourth-round pick).
