Giants QB Daniel Jones has struggled in training camp so far, according to SNY's Connor Hughes. Jones has regularly come up short on deep balls and been inaccurate on shorter passes. It's been a "common occurrence to see Jones simply missing his wide-open guys," Hughes writes.
Here's more of Hughes on Jones' struggles: "He’s consistently been underthrowing players this summer. ... Accuracy is also an issue. There’s a clear point of emphasis from [HC Brian] Daboll to push the ball ever since he yanked the play calling from [OC] Mike Kafka. You’ll see more incompletions for that reason. Jones, though, has missed backs in the flat and receivers short near the sideline at an alarming rate. ... The quarterback has time. The quarterback has receivers open. He’s not making the plays. The offense is struggling because of Jones, not in spite of him. That’s what’s alarming."
It's certainly worth remembering that Jones is working back from a November ACL tear. He didn't take part in any full-team drills this spring, so there's probably some rust to knock off.
But it's worrisome to hear that Jones is struggling so badly considering what he put on tape last season. Jones averaged a career-worth 5.7 yards per pass attempt and threw just two TDs across six appearances.
We'll keep a close eye on his play in camp and preseason over the next month. But, at this point, Jones should be classified as a risky QB3 selection in fantasy drafts.
Jones' struggles are concerning for WR Malik Nabers. The rookie has reportedly been lighting up training camp but needs serviceable QB play to deliver on his fourth- or fifth-round price tag.
