Patriots DT Christian Barmore was diagnosed with blood clots this weekend and treated at Massachusetts General Brigham Hospital, the team announced Sunday.
What They're Saying
Team statement: "While there is no current timetable for his return, we know Christian is getting tremendous care and we look forward to his full recovery."
2024 Fantasy Football Impact
It's too soon to know how this issue will impact Barmore this season (and potentially beyond).
Former Cardinals C Billy Price -- a 2018 first-round pick -- retired in May over potential issues with a blood clot.
Price posted at that point on Instagram: "In the blink of an eye, everything can be taken away. On April 24th I had emergency pulmonary embolism surgery to remove a saddle clot that was entering both of my lungs. As a healthy 29 year old, an unprovoked pulmonary embolism with no further medical explanation is terrifying. I am truly thankful to be alive today."
WR Marquise Goodwin, on the other hand, started 2023 training camp on the non-football illness list with blood clots in his legs and lungs but returned to appear in 12 games for the Browns.
The Patriots just gave Barmore a big four-year extension ahead of his age-25 (and fourth) season. So he'll clearly return to a big role when ready.
Dynasty Impact
This issue should affect Barmore's long-term outlook. Now that the issue's known, Patriots team doctors -- and/or whomever treats him outside the team -- should be on top of it.
Other Winners & Losers
An extended Barmore absence would be bad for the New England defense. He earned the third-best overall Pro Football Focus defensive grade last year, as well as the top pass-rushing grade.
