Giants TE Theo Johnson (hip) passed a physical and was removed from the PUP list. The rookie made his training camp debut on Sunday.
After practice, Johnson said he’s been “itching” to practice and now feels “great.”
According to several beat writers at practice, Johnson immediately saw some first-team reps.
Darren Waller retired this offseason. His absence leaves behind 74 targets (6.1 per game) from the 2023 offense.
Now, Johnson will look to earn reps ahead of guys like Daniel Bellinger, Lawrence Cager, and Chris Manhertz. It's an underwhelming group overall, but it might be a stretch forJohnson, a Round 4 rookie, to see full-time snaps.
Johnson was always expected to return from the hip relatively quickly. The 23-year-old retains a long-term ceiling that stretches into TE1 range.
Recall that he entered draft season as one of the most athletic TEs. Johnson posted a 4.57 forty-yard dash, a 1.55 ten-yard split, a 39.5-inch vertical, and a 125-inch broad jump. All at 6'6, 258 pounds.
Johnson's Penn State production doesn't jump off the page: 77 catches, 938 yards, and 12 TDs across four seasons. But on physical tools and athleticism alone, Johnson will be a name to watch closely.
