Steelers QB Russell Wilson missed his second straight day of practice Friday because of injury. HC Mike Tomlin downplayed what's being reported as "calf tightness," saying the team wants "to keep a minor thing from becoming major."
What They're Saying
Tomlin after Thursday's practice: "Russ woke up today, his calf was tight. It was my decision to sit him down today to create a little short-term discomfort for him, not allowing the small problem to become a bigger problem. He could be characterized as day-to-day. ... He wanted to (practice), and he was probably capable. But I’m getting to know him, and I just chose to create a little misery for him and the offensive unit."
More Tomlin: "But on the flip side of that, it was an awesome opportunity for Justin [Fields] and a challenge for our offensive unit to deal with a little adversity at the outset."
SteelersNow: "Tomlin said on Wednesday that he intends to rotate Fields and Wilson into the mix with the first team throughout training camp, though he declined to specify what that rotation might look like."
2024 Fantasy Football Impact
Fantasy drafters have wanted this to become Fields' job ever since both QBs joined up in Pittsburgh.
Every indication out of Steelers workouts, though, have pointed to the starting gig belonging to Wilson -- at least barring some camp takeover by Fields.
Tomlin, of course, has no reason to declare his starter in July and every reason to be cautious with early-camp injuries.
We'll keep watching this situation, especially because recent seasons have presented plenty of lingering calf injuries.
We still expect Wilson to hit September as the starter. But Fields would carry much more fantasy upside if he gets into the lineup.
Other Winners & Losers
Tomlin might like making his offensive players "miserable," but this offense could use all the time it can get.
The Steelers are acclimating new QBs, a new OC, new O-linemen and a revamped WR corps.
If Wilson's the starter, it will help everyone (besides Fields) to get him back onto the field as soon as possible.
