The Texans on Sunday signed RB Cam Akers.
What They're Saying
Charley Walters of the Pioneer Press on June 30: "If running back Cam Akers, recovering from Achilles surgery last November, passes an upcoming physical, look for the free agent to re-sign with the Vikings."
Instead, Akers worked out with Houston three weeks later and quickly agreed to a deal.
2024 Fantasy Football Impact
Akers is still just 25 but coming off the second Achilles' tear of his NFL career. I'll be surprised if he makes any fantasy impact this year.
It would take a Joe Mixon injury, at the least. Akers will also have to overtake Dameon Pierce on the Houston depth chart to get into that position.
But the only other current competition is Dare Ogunbowale, J.J. Taylor, and seventh-round rookie Jawhar Jordan.
So the biggest takeaway here might be that Houston's RB depth chart stinks.
It's possible this team isn't done with RB moves yet.
Other Winners & Losers
You could view the Akers signing as bad news for other backup RB competitors in Houston, but the burden's on him to prove he can make the regular-season roster.
It's tough to get interested in any Texans RB not named Joe Mixon -- which is a key mark in Mixon's favor.
