Bottom Line

Douglas made the most of a bad situation in 2023.

The diminutive slot gained mid-season PPR value after the loss of Kendrick Bourne (ACL), hitting 10 PPR points five times.

Stiffer competition adds uncertainty to Douglas’ 2024 outlook. But the lack of a proven WR1 gives him the potential to lead this group in targets and catches.

What We Learned Last Year

  • The Pats drafted Douglas (5’8, 192) in Round 6.
    • He became a surprise contributor for a squad that lost Kendrick Bourne to an October ACL tear.
  • In nine games played from Week 7 on, Douglas hit 4+ catches six times.
    • Over that stretch, he finished as a top-36 WR five times – but never higher than WR24.
    • The main reason? He didn’t score on any of his 49 receptions.
    • He garnered only four red zone targets.
    • Douglas also sat out three games with two concussions.
  • This entire unit was limited by poor QB play.
    • Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe combined to throw for 3,392 yards, 16 TDs, and 21 INTs.

What to Expect in 2024

  • New England added WR reinforcements in the draft, selecting Ja’Lynn Polk (Round 2) and Javon Baker (Round 4).
    • Polk brings a physical, middle-of-the-field presence.
    • Baker’s best suited on the outside as a downfield winner.
  • New England’s WR depth remains underwhelming a year after the group totaled only 5 TDs.
    • Kendrick Bourne and Demario Douglas return as short-range targets. Bourne is recovering from an early-season ACL tear.
    • K.J. Bourne joins after a four-year run in Minnesota. His yardage and TDs have dropped steadily since posting 50-655-7 as a rookie.
    • JuJu Smith-Schuster won’t be guaranteed a roster spot after an abysmal ‘23 (29-260-1 in 11 games). Over the offseason, he shared that he’s much healthier than he was last season.
  • The Pats added much-needed QB talent.
    • Jacoby Brissett adds a veteran presence.
    • Drake Maye, the third overall pick, supplies longer-term upside.
    • Those guys will battle to start in training camp, but it’s reasonable for Maye to be developed slowly.
    • Alex Van Pelt arrives as the new play-caller. His units have ranked top 10 in rushes in four of five seasons as OC.

Ja'Lynn Polk Out For Week 8

Patriots WR Ja’Lynn Polk (concussion) missed practice all week and is out for Sunday’s game vs. the Jets. The rookie is off to a rough start, catching just 10 of 26 targets for 78 yards and one TD through seven games. Kayshon Boutte, Demario Douglas, and Kendrick Bourne figure to operate as New England’s top three WRs this weekend.

Douglas only had 3 targets, catching two for 14 yards against the Jaguars. He is just a week removed from his six cath, 92 yard game with a TD last week. Douglas’ snap count was down with the Patriots running more 12 personnel, so Douglas may be a volatile play going forward.

Patriots WR Demario Douglas has played almost exclusively in three-WR sets so far this season. But HC Jerod Mayo said after the Week 6 loss to the Texans that he'll "absolutely" consider playing Douglas in two-WR sets going forward. "He’s one of our best receivers, he can get open against anyone," Mayo added. Douglas was easily New England's most productive receiver vs. Houston, leading the team with nine targets, six catches, and 92 yards. He's now seen exactly nine targets in three of the last four games. More playing time would only boost his weekly fantasy floor and ceiling. Douglas is worth adding this week in fantasy leagues of 12+ teams.

Patriots QB Drake Maye will start this weekend's game vs. the Texans, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. New England hung on to QB Jacoby Brissett as long as it could -- but you can only stick with a QB averaging 5.2 yards per attempt for so long.

Patriots WR K.J. Osborn drew a team-high 6 targets in Sunday's upset win over the Bengals, catching just three for 21 yards. Those 3 receptions tied him with RB Rhamondre Stevenson for the team lead. No Patriot tallied more than 31 receiving yards, as QB Jacoby Brissett threw for only 121 yards on 15-of-24 passing. That target lead for Osborn also proved deceptive vs. the WR corps playing time.

A 2023 Round 6 pick, Douglas quickly made an impact on a Pats offense desperate for pass catchers. While the draft brought a potential QB solution in Drake May, New England also added a pair of WRs (Ja'Lynn Polk and Javon Baker). Mix in a new coaching staff, and Douglas will need to earn a role.
