Drake Maye Dynasty Value

By Kevin English | Updated on Wed, 01 May 2024 . 2:13 PM EDT
Drake Maye dynasty value looks strong with his combo of passing and rushing production. His Draft Sharks Model Score signals a high draft pick.

QUICK LINKS:

Maye’s arrow pointed straight up following a 2022 breakout.

The first-year starter earned ACC Rookie of the Year and ACC Player of the Year honors. He even cracked the top 10 in Heisman voting.

He followed that with a solid 2023 but didn't elevate his game.

Who’s to blame for that, and what can we reasonably expect for Maye’s dynasty value in New England?

Let's jump in.

Waiting Behind a Future Pro

A highly sought-after prospect, Maye chose North Carolina over powerhouse programs like Michigan, Ohio State, Alabama, and Georgia.

Junior QB Sam Howell started throughout Maye’s freshman campaign. Then, when Howell jumped to the pros in 2022, Maye took the ACC by storm.

From Unknown to Distinguished

In 2022, the 6’4, 220-pounder ranked top-6 nationally in passing yards (4,293) and TDs (38). He excelled in efficiency metrics such as adjusted completion rate (75.4%) and yards per attempt (8.3).

A look beneath the surface only supported his rising stock.

Maye's 8.4% big-time throw rate – a Pro Football Focus stat for downfield, tight-window completions – ranked second among qualifying QBs. And it didn’t come at the expense of turnovers.

In fact, his turnover-worthy play rate rested at 2.4% -- well below the median mark in the same 93-QB sample.

Surely, he’d continue rising as a second-year starter…

2023: A Year Stuck in Neutral

While Maye didn’t build off a breakout 2022, he certainly wasn’t awful.

His yards per attempt, adjusted completion rate, and PFF passing grade all nearly matched his 2022 output.

Watch his tape, though, and you’ll see a greater rate of head-scratching accuracy and decision-making. Maye closed the season with his two worst games: at Clemson and at N.C. State.

Maybe it was growing pains for a still-young passer. Just don’t put every ounce of blame on the 21-year-old.

2023 Was a Year of Change

Drake’s top 2 targets – WRs Josh Downs and Antoine Green – turned pro. Downs shined alongside Maye, accounting for 23.8% of the QB's yards, 27.4% of his completions, and 28.9% of his TDs.

WR Devontez Walker joined in 2023 as an upstart transfer. But he played only eight games following an eligibility battle.

At bottom, Maye wasn’t throwing to a WR corps that resembled what Michael Penix or Jayden Daniels had.

Maye also broke in new OC Chip Lindsey, an outside hire who replaced Phil Longo.

Keep all of that in mind as he enters the NFL.

Drake Maye Highlights

Games watched: Florida A&M (2022), Appalachian State (2022), Oregon (2022), South Carolina (2023), Miami (2023), Duke (2023), UCLA (2023)

Come for the arm talent, stay for Maye's fantasy-friendly rushing ability.

Check out the sizzle behind his enticing pro potential:

NFL Caliber Arm

Maye’s power arm shows up in deep passing and in the zip he generates on shorter throws. He’s capable of laying the ball to all areas of the field, with a clear ability to stretch defenses vertically.

Note: Among 52 qualifiers, Maye ranked third in deep-ball adjusted completion rate, behind only Jayden Daniels and Bo Nix.

Here’s a deep-ball example that shows just the right amount of touch and arm strength.

Drake Maye's dynasty Value gets a boost from his arm talent.

Maye showed an ability to manipulate defenders with pump fakes and eye movement. Next, we see him force the DB to bite on the RB, opening enough space to drop in a beautiful ball.

Maye's ability to manipulate defenses is just one reason why he can be an early-career dynasty value.

Strength in the Pocket

Maye isn’t Josh Allen, but his size clearly helps him evade muddy pockets. He didn't miss a game due to injury at UNC, either.

Drake Maye proved capable of extending plays at UNC -- a great sign for his dynasty value.

Rushing Ability = Fantasy Gold

Maye proved effective as a scrambler. He ranked fourth nationally in scramble yards in 2023 and second (behind Jayden Daniels) in 2022.

Across both years, Maye forced 47 missed tackles on scrambles alone.

Drake Maye thrived on scrambles in college. Rushing should elevate Maye's dynasty value in the NFL.

Drake Maye Team Fit: New England Patriots

Maye came off the board as the QB3, behind only Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels.

It was a chalky outcome for a New England squad that entered draft night with Jacoby Brissett at QB1.

But is this a strong fit?

That argument is tough to make, especially with the Pats' current roster construction. Their pre-draft WR depth turned up Demario Douglas, Kendrick Bourne, JuJu Smith-Schuster, and K.J. Osborn.

Ja'Lynn Polk and Javon Baker arrived in the draft. But this figures to remain an underwhelming group of weapons in the short term.

Dynasty Value Conclusion

Maye sits inside the top 20 of our current dynasty QB rankings.

Not bad considering the depth at that position.

While his game needs polishing, the 21-year-old's combination of arm talent and rushing ability supplies a legit top-12 ceiling within the next few years.
