Shark Bites are the latest fantasy football news & NFL updates. Draft Sharks has been in business since 1999. And when we started, redraft was the dominant form of fantasy football. Check out what we've learned about this most basic form of fantasy football along the way.
After a non-committal press conference on Sunday, 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan named QB Jimmy Garoppolo his Week 8 starter on Monday. "We didn't go into that game thinking that Jimmy was one bad game away from losing his job or anything like that," Shanahan explained. "Jimmy didn't play as good as he could, which he knows that and I know that. I think there were some pretty hard circumstances for him -- for both quarterbacks, considering some of the weather. But I definitely thought he could play better." QB Trey Lance (knee) is expected to practice on Wednesday, so he'll presumably be available for this weekend's game vs. the Bears. But it'll be in a gadget role, not as the starter.
Dolphins RB Malcolm Brown will be placed on IR with a quad injury suffered in Sunday's loss to the Falcons, HC Brian Flores said Monday. Brown will be out at least the next 3 weeks vs. the Bills, Texans and Ravens. He's played 28% of Miami's offensive snaps and averaged 4.7 carries and .7 targets per game, so his absence leaves behind a little extra work for RBs Myles Gaskin and Salvon Ahmed.
49ers HC Kyle Shanahan was rather unenthusiastic when asked whether QB Jimmy Garoppolo will remain his starter in Week 8. “I would guess so," Shanahan said. "We had two QBs hurting this week. Jimmy was able to come back and play. We'll see if Trey [Lance] can next week, we're still not sure yet, but I got a lot of things to figure out.” Garoppolo mustered just 181 passing yards with 1 TD and 2 INTs in Sunday night's loss to the Colts -- although, in his defense, the game was played in messy weather. Regardless, expect to see Lance back under center for San Francisco at some point this season. We'll see when rookie is ready to return from his knee injury.
49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo (calf) is off the final injury report and will start Sunday night's game against the Colts. QB Trey Lance has been ruled out with his knee injury, so he won't vulture any snaps from Garoppolo.
49ers QB Trey Lance (knee) did not practice on Monday. QB Jimmy Garoppolo (calf) was out there and looked good according to media members in attendance. At this point, bank on Garoppolo starting this weekend's game against the Colts. That'd be good news for WR Deebo Samuel.
49ers HC Kyle Shanahan said Tuesday that he expects QB Jimmy Garoppolo (calf) to be ready coming out of the Week 6 bye. “I mean, he’s doing good,” Shanahan said. “We’ll see when we get back [after the bye week]. I think he’ll be ready to go next week when we get back. That’s the plan. I know he’s doing a lot better now than he was last week.” Shanahan has consistently said that a healthy Garoppolo remains his starter. And, frankly, QB Trey Lance didn't play well enough in last week's loss to the Cardinals to change that.
49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo (calf) is out for Sunday’s game against the Cardinals. He’ll get a Week 6 bye to heal up. But QB Trey Lance gets his 1st career start this weekend. He’s been shaky as a passer in the preseason and the 2nd half of last week’s game. But his high-end rushing ability gives him QB1 upside.
Rams QB Matt Stafford injured his right index finger in the 2nd quarter of Thursday night's win over the Seahawks but was able to play through it after getting a tape job. “I don’t know (what happened),” Stafford said afterward. “I looked down at a certain point on a drive in the second quarter, I think the one we kicked a field goal on, and I just looked down and felt a little pressure (in the finger). I maybe got it on a handoff or a snap or something. Not 100 percent sure. I looked down, felt a little bit of pressure in there and it was just a little bit out of place. Was able to put it back in and keep going, it didn’t affect me too much, to be honest with you.” Stafford missed a few throws in the win, although it's unclear if the misfires were caused by the finger injury. We'll keep an eye on the situation when the Rams get back to work next week, but Stafford should be fine for Week 6's matchup with the Giants.
Rams TE Tyler Higbee injured his shoulder in the 2nd quarter of Thursday night's game vs. the Seahawks and is officially questionable to return. We'll update his status when we know more.
Update: Higbee returned after missing just a few plays.
49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo (calf) missed practice again on Thursday. It continues to look like QB Trey Lance will get his 1st career start vs. Arizona this weekend. We'll see if Garoppolo can get on the practice field tomorrow.
49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo (calf) did not practice on Wednesday. QB Trey Lance took the 1st-team reps. HC Kyle Shanahan still believes Garoppolo has a shot to play vs. the Cardinals this weekend, but Lance seems like the odds-on favorite to be under center for that one.
49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo has been diagnosed with a calf contusion and has a chance to play vs. the Cardinals on Sunday, HC Kyle Shanahan said. "It wasn't as bad as we thought it might have been," Shanahan added. "Definitely better news today than the feeling we had last night." We'll keep an eye on Garoppolo's status this week. It's worth noting that the 'Niners have a Week 6 bye, so they could get Garoppolo extended rest if they hold him out this week.
49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo told reporters that he suffered a right calf injury in the 1st series of Sunday's loss to the Seahawks. "Tweaked a calf," Garoppolo said. "It hurt initially. I thought I could keep trying to go in. It just kept getting worse and worse, traveling down to the Achilles a little bit." Garoppolo doesn't believe he injured his Achilles but is set for an MRI on Monday. "I'm hopeful it'll just be a couple weeks or something like that," he added. It sounds like we should expect QB Trey Lance to start next weekend's game vs. the Cardinals. The 'Niners then get a Week 6 bye.
The 49ers opened the 2nd half of Sunday's game against the Seahawks with QB Trey Lance behind center. Jimmy Garoppolo reportedly has a calf injury and is questionable to return. Garoppolo was on the sideline, though, with an earpiece in. So it doesn't appear the Niners plan to try to get him back into the game -- barring injury to Lance, of course. We'll see where this goes.
Update: ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Garoppolo will have an MRI and told reporters that he hopes "it's just a couple of weeks or something."
Dolphins RB Malcolm Brown started Saturday's preseason opener vs. the Bears. Per Pro Football Focus' Nathan Jahnke, Brown out-snapped RB Myles Gaskin 16 to 7 with the 1st-team offense. Gaskin then played into the 2nd quarter with Miami's backups. "You saw all 3 backs played, all 3 of them got carries," HC Brian Flores said after the game, referring to Brown, Gaskin and Salvon Ahmed. "Pick one out and put them in, basically. We like all 3 guys. They all do good things. And I think we saw that today. And [we'll] just keep working all 3 guys." That sure sounds like this will be an ugly committee backfield. We'll get another look at the rotation in Miami's 2nd preseason game. But, for now, we've moved Gaskin well down the RB rankings and Brown up.
Niners GM John Lynch told ESPN's Adam Schefter Tuesday that QB Jimmy Garoppolo is "playing his best football since he's been here; it's something everyone's recognizing." The change from Garoppolo to Trey Lance -- who has been generating buzz lately -- is inevitable. But fantasy drafters should realize that Garoppolo remains the leader to open the season behind center in San Francisco.
Rams QB Matt Stafford practiced on Tuesday, running the 1st-team offense in the team's 1st padded session of training camp. The thumb injury he suffered on Monday clearly isn't a concern. Consider Stafford's fantasy stock unaffected.
X-rays on Rams QB Matt Stafford's right thumb came back clean, The Athletic's Jourdan Rodrigue reports. "I don’t think anybody is panicking, although I would not be surprised if he were to be held out for a day at least as an extra precaution," Rodrigue added. We'll keep an eye on Stafford, but this doesn't sound like something that'll impact his 2021 season.
Rams QB Matt Stafford injured his right (throwing) thumb during Monday's practice. He reportedly slammed it into a defender's helmet on his follow-through. “We’ll see,” HC Sean McVay said after practice. “We’ll see what they say and take it one day at a time.” Stafford had surgery to repair a partially torn ligament in that thumb in early March, right after he was traded to the Rams. We'll update his status as soon as we know more.
49ers HC Kyle Shanahan declared QB Jimmy Garoppolo his starter on Tuesday. "There's no open competition right now," Shanahan said. "Jimmy is coming in as the one and Trey [Lance] is coming in as the two." Chalk this one up as typical early-camp coach speak. Garoppolo might be the favorite for the Week 1 starting job, but we imagine Lance could change that with a strong summer. And we're definitely betting on seeing the rookie under center at some point this season.
